Music Technology Limited owns a recommendation application called “Generator X”, which reads your digital music collection and connects you with your perfect music mentor. It is the only recommendation app based on using music experts which gives it a very human and natural feel.
The mentors are drawn from hundreds of artists, writers, producers and DJ’s. The expert makes recommendations of music you might wish to listen to or buy, based on the match between their digital music collection and yours.
How it works
It works as a white label service with Music Technology skinning the app for different brand partners. For instance, in a deal with the Mail on Sunday in October 2009, the app was used with the Robbie Williams cover-mount – with Robbie as the expert recommending tracks for users to listen to and buy under the title “Complete My Artist”.
A deal with X-factor in 2009 enabled visitors to www.itv.com/xfactor to find the finalist whose collection most closely matched their own, and get recommendations from them. You can see the app in action at www.freekly.com where it powers a service matching users with articles by music journalists.
The commercial side
Music Technology is run by its founders, Andy Dean and Ben Wolff, two writer/producers and D.J’s with a string of hits across 20 million album sales. They have written and produced for Texas, Bush and Gabrielle, and discovered Joss Stone.
I am a shareholder in Music Technology and help negotiate deals with brand partners. To date these have included the Mail on Sunday, the X Factor, Quintessentially, Rocks Back Pages, and Pete Tong. I have also brokered deals with iTunes and Tesco Digital to fulfil downloads of tracks recommended by the app.
